Digital Equipment Corp has been testing a new smart kiosk personal computer at a cybercafe in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which dispenses with keyboard and mouse and uses an animated figure. The animation, alerted by an attached camera when a human approaches and slows down, uses a script and corresponding facial expressions to instruct them how to use the system via its touch-sensitive screen. DEC plans to test the system throughout 1998 and begin selling in 1999, says Bloomberg.
