How did DEC do in Japan in the year to end-June? Very well Nippon Digital Equipment reports that turnover rose 25% to $540m, and that operating profit was 20% ahead at $98m: the improvement was attributed to increased user investment in engineering workstations and networks to run financial systems, and over the past year, DEC has opened new sales and service offices in Kumamoto, Kyushuu; Toyoda – the site of the Toyota factory; and Hachioji near Tokyo; and has begun the assembly of a range of computers from the VAXstation 2200 to the VAX 8840, with plans to assemble over 2,000 machines a year; in the financial field a number of major new customers have moved into the company’s orbit, including Mitsubishi Bank, Nippon LIfe and Yasuda Trust and Banking, all buying the VAX.
