Provides parental controls to direct and monitor kids’ online activities
Dell has unveiled Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition, a new netbook computer designed specifically for kids. The new netbook features Nickelodeon’s trademark green slime and comes with additional educational content to appeal to parents.
The Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition is a portable netbook that comes with parental controls. The company said that its new product weighs less than 3 pounds so that it can be easily carried by kids and has a 10.1-inch colour LCD display and built-in wireless internet access.
The new product features a personalised user interface with Nickelodeon-branded desktop wallpaper and icons. According to the company, the Nickelodeon-themed interface provides direct access to web portals that serve up dynamically updated content at dedicated Dell ‘landing zones’ at Nickelodeon’s website. The ‘Just for You’ widget on the new product lets kids select their own dynamically updated content including the latest games and TV programs.
In addition, the Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition will include a desktop animaticon linked to educational content from Whyville, where kids can participate in educational activities and games sponsored by authoritative organisations such as NASA, Scholastic Publishing, the Centers for Disease Control and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
The Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition is expected to be available online in the US at Dell’s website and on Walmart store shelves and on Walmart’s website in October. Pricing and other details are expected to be announced prior to first shipments.
Dell said that the system comes with easy set-up directions and includes a 15-month subscription to McAfee Family Security, which provides parental controls to carefully direct and monitor kids’ online activities. If it’s lost or stolen, the Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition can report its location on the internet with its built-in LoJack for laptops anti-theft program.
