Dell has begun selling its Dimension E510n desktop, its first mid-range desktop that does not include a pre-installed operating system.
Texas-based Dell began selling OS-free desktops to consumers and SMEs a couple of years ago, but until now they have been entry-level machines only, said a company spokesperson.
The E510n comes with a blank hard drive with no OS installed, which enables SMEs to install a Linux-based or other open-source OS system. The machine comes with a copy of FreeDOS OS, as an option.
The desktop is available only in the US. It retails for $849 and features a Pentium 4 processor, 512-MB DDR2 memory, a 128-MB ATI RADEON X300SE HyperMemory video card and an 80-GB SATA hard drive.
