Ireland’s Democratic left has claimed that Telecom Eireann is afraid that deregulation of the country’s international calls market will lead to serious loss of revenue, and that the move is the first step towards privatisation: Telecom Eireann has resolved its legal dispute with private Irish telecommunications company ESAT Ltd, and agreed to give it the lines necessary to provide cheaper international calls to businesses; ESAT is able to offer competitive rates because it buys international telephone circuits in bulk and passes the savings – which go as high as 30% – onto its customers.
