Deutsche Post is leading a consortium of major technology players, including IBM, in developing innovative logistics products to increase the efficiency of supply chains.
The partners within the ‘DHL Innovation Initiative’ have decided to pool their logistics, technology and IT expertise. In initial projects, industry-specific RFID applications will be tested in the supply chains of the partner companies and brought to market.
Pilot projects have already been started in the pharmaceutical and electronic industries in Europe, the US and Asia. DHL says it expects the first results as early as mid-2006.
The companies said that the initiative will cover all elements of the logistics chain. DHL will offer customers express and logistics solutions, while Intel will develop networking and communications products. The combination of SAP’s and IBM’s system integration expertise will provide the foundation of new business applications. Alongside these companies, Philips will bring its leading RFID technology to the venture.
