Why is Apple Computer Inc planning to jump a number when it follows the planned Mac OS release 8.6 with its next generation operating system, Mac OS 10, or Mac OS X? The MacOS Rumors Web page believes that, aside from wanting to keep the mystery of the OS X moniker, the reason is that OS-9 has already been trademarked by Des Moines, Iowa-based real-time operating systems vendor Microware Systems Corp and Apple was apparently wary about getting into a legal battle. Mac OS 8.6, due to ship early in 1999, is the updated version of Mac OS 8.5, codenamed Allegro, expected this fall.
