Services giant Electronic Data Systems Corp has formed a Semiconductor & Electronics Group designed to provide information technology consulting and services specifically for the needs of the semiconductor industry. EDS said the new group will focus on manufacturing execution system implementations, equipment automation of critical man-machine functions, integration of MES and enterprise resource planning systems into the supply chain and management of computer-integrated manufacturing functions. The company said it has previously implemented all aspects of these service offerings for various semiconductor and electronics customers in the past, giving the group a head start in the area. Customers it has served in the past several years include Philips Semiconductors, Fujitsu Microelectronics, Delphi Delco Electronics Systems and Flip Chip Technologies. The formation of the group is seen as a further commitment to those customers as well as a launching pad for new contracts. EDS is banking on the fact that the changing landscape in semiconductor manufacturing, including the migration to 300mm wafer sizes, smaller design rules, increased chip functions and specialized IC packaging techniques, has increased the need for the kind of integrated services it offers. It boasts that it can identify root causes of problems and inefficiencies and deliver effective fixes in a short time frame, giving customers increased productivity and fab utilization through its package of systems engineering, systems architecture and project management.
