Bermuda-based carriers’ carrier Flag Telecom Ltd and US network and service operator Global TeleSystems Group Inc (GTS) are increasing the capacity of their Flag Atlantic-1 transatlantic cable from two to 2.4 Tbps. FA-1, as the joint venture project is known, is a dual cable system that will connect London, Paris and New York. The timetable is for the first 5,900km northern cable to be completed in the second half of 2000, with the 6,350km southern branch and a connecting terrestrial route in the US, plus an upgrade of the northern route, online in the first quarter of 2001.
The partners said the $1.2bn funding for the first stage of the project has already been secured, with customers already on board including Teleglobe, Singapore Telecom, Worldstar, Broadband Chello, Tiscali and Telecom Malaysia. GTS itself is also purchasing a fiber pair on the cable in a separate deal from the FA-1 joint venture.
