Fortinet Inc is adding support for instant messaging protocols to its line of multi-function security appliances, taking it into competition with the likes of FaceTime, Akonix and Symantec.
FortiOS 3.0, a firmware upgrade for its FortiGate appliances, enables content scanning, antivirus, logging, and file transfer blocking on all the main public IM protocols, according to the company.
It can also apply different policies to different users based on the built-in access control list or, another new feature, Active Director integration, the firm said.
The FortiManager management application also gets a 3.0 release. Now it can take attack signature updates from Fortinet and push them out to distributed devices, according to Fortinet.
