It was back in March that word first surfaced that Fujitsu planned to reimport some finished mainframes from its Amdahl Corp affiliate and market them in Japan (CI No 896). Now all the loose ends are tied up and Fujitsu has announced that it will be marketing the new top-end 5990-1400 and 5990-700 to its customers who are not satisfied with its own OS1V MVS-derived operating system and want to run the Real Thing from IBM. The largermachine will rent for a whopping $1.4m a month, the smaller for $690,000 a month, and Fujitsu hopes to place 30 in three years.
