Fujitsu Research Laboratories has held successful trials of a broadband ISDN system that can transmit speech and computer data together, using cable television transmission technology: the system, which is claimed to be 1,000 times faster than the ISDN system introduced by Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp this year, uses an ATM asynchronous transfer mode exchange on fibre optic cables running at 1.8Gbits-per-second; the ATM exchange can switch 16 150Mbit-per-second lines so that 12 data streams can be transmitted concurrently; Fujitsu plans to produce a commercial version i three to four years.
