GEC Plessey Telecommunications Ltd yesterday announced the UK’s first stand-alone data-telephone for British Telecommunications Plc’s basic rate Integrated Services Digital Network: to date most of the interest in the UK has focussed on data applications or cards that plug into personal computers and then support telephone handsets – but the new toy is definitely a phone, and the basic model has an RS-232 serial port built in to support communication at up to 38.4Kbps and will cost UKP900 – when it has received the nod from the British Approvals Board for Telecommunications.
