Peter Bross, chief government telecommunications regulator in Germany expects the US to insist that Germany and France end their telephone monopolies as a condition for approving the alliance with Sprint Corp – and he told Reuter he thinks that that would be a jolly good thing: he says he sees the alliance as a non-aggression treaty that could undermine European efforts to liberalise telecommunications markets in 1998 Because Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom have formed a non-aggression pact, the least that should be required to approve this alliance is for telephone monopolies in both countries to be dismantled, he said, adding sadly that he did not believe the German government would be bold enough to open telecommunications markets in exchange for approval.
