The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has passed through the final hoops necessary before the approval of Gigabit Ethernet as an IEEE standard. At the latest meeting in Montreal, called to monitor work done in various IEEE Gigabit Ethernet working groups, the 100 times faster than standard Ethernet, participants succeeded in ironing out a problem in transmission down multi-mode fiber cables, and agreed on maximum lengths for fiber transfer. The standardisation process is still on track for final approval in March 1998, and full ratification by the end of 1998.
