The third week in May has been earmarked by Hewlett-Packard for the launch of a new addition to its top-end HP 9000 RISC server line that should boost its performance range up to the mainframe level. The multi-processor machine, dubbed Corporate Computing Server, is expected to support up to 3,000 users, and represents a performance boost of up to 7% on Hewlett-Packard’s top of the line 9000 Series 800 servers. Hewlett-Packard’s current implementation of symmetrical multi-processing HP/UX supports up to four CPUs, but this will be extended to support the new machines. The company claims that IBM is now the only competitor that it comes up against on every deal.
