Hitachi Ltd has come out with the H-6355 LAN Interface Controller, enhanced model, a local network communications control processor for the open systems interconnection environment of Hitachi M-series mainframe computers and S-series supercomputers. The device can reduce the load on the host computer by approximately 20%, by offloading work such as the network and transport layers (Layers 3 and 4 of the OSI basic model) from the mainframe. It can also increase total throughput when connected, by offloading the protocol processing of the data link layers (OSI Model Layers 1 and 2). Four models are to be provided: the H-6355-1E CSMA/CD specification local area network (10Mbps Ethernet) device for connection to the VOS3 environment, the H-6355-2E for FDDI specification local area networks (100Mbps local networks) for connection in the VOS3 environment, the H-6355-1 a CSMA/CD specification local network for connection in the VOS1/ES2 and VOS3 mainframe operating systems, for TCP/IP offload; and the H-6533-2 a similar model for TCP/IP offload or the VOS3 and VOS1/ES2 environments. The four products are priced at between $42,000 and $74,000, and will be available from next year, between March and June.
