More details on that 5.25 erasable optical disk drive from Hitachi Ltd mentioned in CI No 1,132: the thing was jointly developed with Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp – it was international carrier Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co that helped Sony Corp with its erasable drive – and is designed to the standard adopted by the International Standards Organisation last autumn; the thing has a transfer rate of 925Kbytes-per-second, but there is still no information on access times; it costs $4,600 with controller capable of handling four optical drives, samples go out late next month, and Hitachi hopes to ship 20,000 of the things in the first year.
