Rather surprisingly, Hitachi Ltd says it expects its exports of general-purpose computers – mainframes – to the US to grow by 50% in the six months from October 1992 compared with the same period in 1991 because of steady demand for its new model G8 series: it says increasing orders for the new model at Hitachi Data Systems Co Ltd reflect the US economic recovery, and the stage in the mainframe cycle; total exports are likely to rise only 30% in the period because of poor performance here in Europe.
