Not too many Crays on Wall Street or in the City, but Hitachi Ltd and NEC Corp have each received orders for scientific supercomputers from securities firms, which want them for development and analysis of financial data: Yamaichi Securities will replace a DEC VAX with a Hitachi supercomputer this May, with the thing due to come into service in October; and Daiwa Securities has chosen NEC’s SX supercomputer but has not decided exactly when and where to use it; up to now, even in Japan, securities houses have hitherto used only general-purpose mainframes and minicomputers, and supercomputer manufacturers are therefore thrilled at the new development.
