Hitachi America Ltd outlined at PC Expo Wednesday the company’s initiative to establish DVD drives as a data storage standard for personal computers. The company says it will begin sample shipments of DVD-RAM drives this week, and expects that systems using the technology as a principal data storage device will be available in the fourth quarter. If all goes as planned, Hitachi expects the fully-rewritable format to become common in both corporate network and individual computing applications within 12 to 18 months.
