Based on early returns, the strong holiday season predicted for electronic commerce appears to have lived up to expectations. America Online Inc says its members spent more than $1bn with online retailers available through its service during the holiday shopping season. AOL also claims that 1.25 million members made online purchases for the first time during the period. Meanwhile, the number of unique visitors to shopping sites (including toys, books/music/movies, department stores and apparel) increased 25% during the four-week period leading up to Christmas, according to internet audience measurement firm Media Metrix Inc.
