Although Sun Microsystems Inc has been boasting about its new lead in overall Unix server shipments (CI No 3,461), Hewlett Packard Co retained the lead in high-end systems priced above $1m, according to the same International Data Corp figures. And Sequent Computer Systems ranked second, above third place Sun, which entered the category this year through its acquisition of the Starfire SMP server line from Silicon Graphics Inc’s Cray unit. Sequent said it made the top of the list in Europe, where it has a 43% share of unit shipments.
