IBM Corp is selling approximately 4,000 locally assembled personal computers each month in the Commonwealth of Independent States, according to local company spokesmen Maria Zozo. By far the most the most popular model is a 25MHz 80486 system configured with 4Mb RAM, a 129Mb hard disk and SVGA monitor, which is retailing with a recommended price of $1,800. IBM concedes it is still quizzed by Russian customers that fear that the products – assembled as part of a joint venture in Kvant just outside Moscow – might not meet IBM’s global quality standards. A team from IBM Greenock is on site to monitor quality control.
