The plunge in mainframe disk drive sales at IBM Corp over the past five years is really startling, and it is so late with the arrays due to be announced today that observers question whether they will do more than hold the line: the Wall Street Journal reckons that its sales have fallen more than 60% in the past five years and are not expected to reach $2,000m this year; it now has only 54% of the market, compared with 82% in 1989; Meta Group gives Hitachi Ltd 20%, up from 10% in 1989, EMC Corp 17% from zilch five years ago, even Amdahl Corp up a couple of ticks to 8%.
