IBM, which increased the US prices of most 3090 upgrades – and maintenance on 3090s – on Tuesday (see page four, inside), announced a whole string of other price hikes yesterday, with most hardware up 5% and most maintenance up 3%. Excluded are the 3090Ss, the 3990, the AS/400s, the new PS/2 models, and all applications for PC-DOS, OS/2, and AIX on the RT. The increases in hardware are effective now, the software charges and per-call service increases are effective September 1, maintenance is November 1.
IBM has scored its first personal computer software copyright infringement victory in a European court. It received a permanent injunction against Bit Computers SpA barring the Rome company from infringing its copyright in the AT Basic Input Output System, BIOS, and Basic Interpreter. In evidence, the expert witness called by the court opined that 95% of the ROM code in Bit’s PC-Bit 286 was similar to the IBM original. The company has dropped the computer from its line. It sold 9,000 machines last year, and recorded turnover of about $22m.
