Major new release of ImagePlus family with support for new optical products launched
There are several new products in the ImagePlus family including the 3995 Optical Library Data-ervers, a family of 5.25 write-once optical products; and SAA ImagePlus Workfolder Application Facility/400 Version 2 Release 2, providing support for the IBM 3995 Compact Optical Library Dataserver Model 042. The 3995 Optical Library Dataservers Models 112 and 132 will be supported by SAA ImagePlus Object Distribution Manager Version 2 Release 1.1. A new Program Request Price Quotation special, the ImagePlus Application Enabler Subset/400, makes available a subset of the Workfolder Application Facility/400 Application Programming Interfaces. SAA ImagePlus MVS/ESA has been extended and will include additional image services. SAA Folder Application Facility Version 2 Release 1.1 offers new and enhanced application program interfaces, and SAA ImagePlus Object Distribution Manager Version 2 Release 1.1 has been enhanced to enable a front-end CICS application to deliver a document to be stored or retrieve a document to be worked on. IBM has also announced two new ImagePlus object management products, ImagePlus CICS Object Index Application MVS/ESA and ImagePlus Workstation Communications Interface/2. These products enable vendor and user-written, non-ImagePlus MVS/ESA host and OS/2 applications to use ImagePlus data management and storage capabilities to store objects such as digitised X-rays, spoken messages and E-size drawings. The objects have to conform to system-specified requirements and any specified limitations.
CICS Object Index Application MVS/ESA
The ImagePlus object management programs enable non-ImagePlus MVS/ESA and OS/2 applications to use ImagePlus data management and storage capabilities to store and retrieve objects. The set is composed of three software components. The first is ImagePlus CICS Object Index Application MVS/ESA, a host-based application that provides user screens and DB2 for indexing, viewing and printing objects. It manages storage or of objects using the extensions to SAA ImagePlus Folder Application Facility MVS/ESA. The second component is ImagePlus Workstation Communications Interface/2. It provides application programming interfaces for communication between OS/2 applications and ImagePlus MVS/ESA. The last component comprises extensions to SAA ImagePlus Folder Application Facility MVS/ESA Application Programming Interfaces. This enables the storage and retrieval of objects using SAA ImagePlus Object Distribution Manager MVS/ESA. ImagePlus Object Index Application is a CICS front-end module which enables object capture, storage on disk and optical media, and online distribution through the MVS/ESA SNA network. Available June 28, costs for processor groups 18 to 80 are between $20,550 and $182,600, with distributed systems licence options ranging from $15,412 to $136,950. Monthly licences are from $571 to $5,070, and the distributed options go from 4428 to $3,802.
SAA Imageplus Workstation Program/2 Version 1
IBM says that the SAA ImagePlus Workstation Program/2 Version 1 will now be based on OS/2 Extended Edition Version 1.3 when the Workstation Program/2 becomes available. Version 1 supports IBM’s LaserPrinter and LaserPrinter E and both printers are connectable to the personal computer via the parallel port and can be used for both image and text printing.
ImagePlus Workstation Communications Interface/2
The new ImagePlus Workstation Communications Interface/2 provides application programming interfaces for communication between OS/2 applications and ImagePlus MVS/ESA, turning the mainframe into a server. The Workstation Communications Interface opens the ImagePlus host system for storage and retrieval of objects of various types. IBM says that the Workstation Communications Interface has functions that enable the applications to manage new data types or formats through the same services provided by ImagePlus MVS/ESA for MO:DCA objects. The Workstation Communications Interface provides the transpo
rt of objects between the workstation and the ImagePlus MVS/ESA host system, and object interpretation is done by the OS/2 user application. The program package sells for $625 and additional licences come in at $500.
50% Discount on IBM’s ImagePlus/400 Starter
IBM is extremely keen to get people to start using ImagePlus, which has not got off to a fantastic start, and for a limited time only, US customers that have installed an AS/400 9406 processor on or before April 19, 1991, can receive a 50% discount on the primary licence charge for the first SAA ImagePlus Workfolder Application Facility/400 Version 2 in a single physical location. Workfolder Application Facility/400 Version 2 must be ordered on or before October 22, 1991, and the date of installation must be on or after April 22, but no later than December 23, 1991.
SAA ImagePlus Folder Application Facility MVS/ESA Licensed Program
And in another move to try to jump start the product, IBM has cut its basic and Distributed Systems Licence Option monthly licence charges, annual licence charges, and primary licence charges for the SAA ImagePlus Folder Application Facility MVS/ESA licensed program. The new costs became effective from May 1 and they will apply to programs charges which are due on or after April 22.
