IBM’s first attempt at an OEM disk drive, the 8 Piccolo, is an unhappy memory, but the company has come a long way since then in the OEM world, and its latest offering has the hallmarks of a much more competitive product. According to Electronic News, IBM has been showing off its Rochester, Minnesota-sourced 314Mb 5.25 Winchester, first units of which are going into the Personal System/2, to potential OEM customers, and looks for sales to workstation builders in competition with the likes of Maxtor and Priam.
