IBMers are so imbued with the philosophy that life is real, life is earnest that it is hard for IBM Corp to persuade the world that it is serious about fun and games, but the company was doing its best at the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show, with president Jack Kuehler giving the keynote address and talking of all the appropriate technologies in the IBM locker. The company also announced one or two new alliances, notably one with Polaroid Corp, which is working with IBM on a project involving digital camera systems and mobile computers. IBM showed a prototype of the integrated system at show: it combines an integrated Polaroid colour digital camera system that captures photographic quality images – two to three times better than standard television quality – in digital format directly on an IBM mobile or desktop computer for storage on disk and incorporation into applications. Among the other concepts Kuehler discussed was exploration with Blockbuster Video Inc of a system that would enable customers to mix and match recorded tracks from a database and create their own compact disks on the spot.IBM is co-operating with Seiko Epson Co on the wristwatch pagers designed by now-defunct AT&E Corp, which were licensed to Seiko.
