IBM Corp says it will invest $500m in its disk drive business to increase manufacturing capacity around the world. Disk drive business has not been a runaway success over the past five years, and the campaign to become a major OEM supplier got off to an encouraging start but soon fizzled. The first of the capacity increases will come on-line later this year, with total manufacturing volumes increasing by 60% by 1998. The accelerated rate of capital investment is being fueled by heavy demand for 2.5 and 3.5 drives, as well as its disk arrays. Beneficiaries of the investment are the plants in San Jose; Szekesfehervar, Hungary; and Gaudalajara, Mexico and it will also add some further assembly capacity in the Far East, including China.
