The latest scenario to reach us on IBM’s next generation top-end disk drives is that they will be announced on or about July 27, with a new version of the 3990 controller – Model 4? – that will support only the new drives – and the new drives will be supported only by 3090s running MVS/ESA, so that IBM will be able to continue selling 3380K drives to its non-ESA 3090 users.
