One of the more unconvincing stories doing the rounds of City parlours these dog – or dogs and cats – days of summer is that IBM UK is scared stiff that, now that Plessey Co Plc is on the brink of landing Hoskyns Group Plc, STC Plc will take the opportunity of snapping up Plessey: IBM’s alleged worry is that this would fatally damage its close relationship with Hoskyns, which is one of IBM’s biggest UK resellers, and also has all those lovely facilities management contracts that again usually involve lots of IBM kit – if STC took Plessey, it would no doubt like Hoskyns to push ICL kit where possible.
