Inmos International is working flat out to meet demand for the CLUT Colour Look-Up Table chip that is a key component in the upmarket models of IBM’s Personal System/2 line – all the would-be clonemakers are queuing for the chip – but the company needs $85m to upgrade its Newport, Gwent line to fabricate 6 wafers rather than the present 4. There is little chance of parent Thorn EMI Plc coming up with the cash, which is why Thorn is so anxious to find an investment buyer or partner for Inmos – but the company may come up with enough cash to enable Inmos to increase 4 output.
