Digital radio technology developer iBiquity Digital Corp has announced that Intel Corp’s investment arm Intel Capital has invested an unspecified amount in the company, and said it would be working with Intel on commercialization of its technology.
The company said its HD radio technology allows digital radio signals to ride the same airwaves as analog AM/FM radio. It believes that future HD Radio products will include not only millions of traditional radio products but new portable digital media devices such as mobile phones and digital media players.
Columbia, Maryland-based iBiquity was created in 2000 by the merger of Lucent Digital Radio and USA Digital Radio.
The US Federal Communications Commission approved HD Radio technology in 2002, and the commercial roll-out of the technology began in 2003.
