Struggling Iomega Corp, the Roy, Utah company that crams 20Mb on a 5.25 hard shell floppy disk, but is now under pressure from the threat of a 3.5 20Mb floppy from Briar Technology (CI No 775), has reached a major landmark in its chequered history, with the shipment of the 250,000th 8 inch Bernoulli Box removable data storage system, first introduced in May 1981 after the company was formed by IBM refugees who had had their storage project cancelled by Big Mother. Iomega reckons that over half of the Bernoulli Box products sold are in use at US Fortune 1000 companies, in addition to a significant number of businesses of all sizes worldwide. Many companies, including Martin-Marietta, Westinghouse, Weyerhauser and Pacific Gas and Electric, have standardised on the Bernoulli Box for their daily mass storage needs.
