Iridium LLC has now signed GSM Groupe Speciale Mobile roaming contracts in six European countries, as it builds up to the launch of its first commercial services in September 1998. Iridium has signed with Orange Group Plc in the UK, E-Plus Mobilfunk GmbH and Mannesmanm Mobilifunk GmbH in Germany, Telefonica de Espana in Spain, Comviq and Europolitan in Sweden, Mobilkom GmbH in Austria, and Eircell and E-Sat in Ireland. By the launch, it expects the majority of European GSM cellular network operators will be able to access its network.
