Italtel SpA, the Italian telecommunications equipment company owned by state holding group Stet SpA, has signed a licensing agreement with Korean Samsung Semiconductor and Telecommunications: under the agreement, the Seuol-based company will manufacture a range of digital transmission systems including pulse code modulation and terminals for transmission via optical fibre; Italtel will offer local training and support and plans are in the pipeline for joint sales of turn-key transmission systems in other Eastern Asia countries; Italtel looks to the deal to secure a large slice of the Korean market in digital networks, estimating that the market for pulse code modulators will be worth 150 billion lire over the next five years – that works out at something like $100m or so.
