Italtel SpA warns that it will lay off 1,700 employees, about 10% of its workforce, next year, to improve its competiteveness: it says it has presented its plan to trade unions, who are demanding that points be clarified before they agree to discuss the cuts – the unions want to know the government’s investment plans for the telecommunications sector and whether Italtel will be included in the privatisation of parts of its IRI holding company announced last month; of the 1,700 threatened job losses, 800 are in production and 900 in administration, it said.
