French storage vendor LaCie SA last week announced its quad-speed CDRW-428 drive, which is reckons to have the market’s fastest writing speed over a universal serial bus. The Paris-based company operates as a value added OEM, acquiring media and drives for both tape and disc, integrating them into its own casing and adding its own driver software and energy supply, as well as offering on-site warranties to enhance its products’ appeal vis-a-vis the drive manufacturers themselves.
Earlier this year it launched tape devices based on Quantum’s DLT8000, Sony’s AIT2 and the DDS4 DAT drive, a joint development by HP and Sony. The new CDRW-428 drive similarly contains a disc drive supplied by Sony. It runs on both the Windows 98 and Mac operating systems, the only hardware requirement being the presence of a USB port on the machine.
LaCie is the result of the 1998 acquisition of Quantum’s subsidiary LaCie Ltd by Electronique d2 SA, which then adopted the LaCie name. It has been quoted on the Nouveau Marche small cap exchange in Paris since 1996.
