Cray Research Inc says that Lawrence Livermore Laboratory has ordered and installed a Y-MP8D supercomputer to replace an X-MP system at Livermore Computing Center; terms were not disclosed; the machine replaced is the one that IBM Corp claimed last year had been replaced with one of its RS/6000 workstation clusters; Cray also said the US Department of Energy’s Bettis Laboratory in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania ordered a Cray Y-MPC90 supercomputer system; no terms.
