Network back-up specialist Legato Systems Inc is making a renewed push into Europe with the opening of offices in the UK, France and Germany. Some 16% of Legato’s business last year was non-US, up a single percentage point from the previous year, but the company, which filed to go public back in May, expects more impressive growth from now on. It already has a centralised European support office in Amsterdam. Legato was in the UK at the Networks ’95 show in Birmingham the other week, where it said a Hierarchical Storage Manangement extension to its flagship Networker back-up product, was not likely to appear until late in the year. It is also preparing an Windows NT Server option – it already has a client – for around the same time, and is looking for further database back-up support beyond the current Oracle, Informix and Sybase options. Palo Alto-based Legato now has 125 employees worldwide and ships NetWorker through 14 OEM customers as well as direct under Solaris, SunOS, AIX, Santa Cruz Unix and NetWare servers. Personal Computer, Unix, NetWare and Windows NT clients are supported, and mainframe access is now available through third parties. It said the capital gained from a public offering – estimated at around $30m – will allow it lots of flexibility in terms of expansion – we believe it’s needed, the firm said.
