Given the real need in central Europe, one of the more stomach-churning features of last month’s European Summit in Edinburgh was the parade of the slightly less wealthy European Community countries – led by Spain – standing with their hand out demanding much bigger handouts from the other members, which in effect means Germany and the UK, the only net contributors to the budget, like so mamy derelict beggars on the streets, but the European Investment Bank is advancing $16m to Bord Telecom Eireann for the continuing expansion and modernisation of Eire’s telecommunications network: the funds will go to Irish Telecommunications Investment Plc, Telecom Eireann’s treasury management and financing subsidiary, and will be mainly used for digital switching, digital microwave links and development of optical fibre routes.
