Logica Plc has installed and tested an experimental expert system that monitors and diagnoses brake faults on London Underground tube trains; because of the particles of dust and sand found in the tunnels, and the vibration of the trains, the expert system is held in semiconductor memory and not on floppy or sealed disks; as a result, Logica says, the system had to be written from scratch without using expert system shells or artificial intelligence languages; the work should lead to a monitoring system for the next generation of tube trains due to come in to service from 1990.
