Market talk suggests that telecommunications giant Lucent Corp has had its eye on high-speed digital subscriber line specialist Pairgain Technologies Inc, which supplies HDSL technology to Alactel Network Systems Inc as well as selling it itself. Pairgain, of Tustin, California, had 1996 revenues of $205.4m, and a current market capitalization of $1.6bn. It recently made a $94m acquisition of asynchronous transfer mode firm Avidia Inc.
