Cable & Wireless Plc is holding preliminary discussions with other shareholders of Macau’s telephone company Companhia Telecommunicacoes de Macau, in which it holds 51%: the discussions follow a statement by the Macau government that it is willing to extend the company’s concession beyond 2001, by which time the Portuguese colony will have passed to China – that happens in 1999; the company is also owned 28% by Companhia Portuguese Radio Marconi, 20% by CITIC Pacific Ltd and 1% by the government of Macau.
