Matsushita Electric Industrial Co has developed a dual-arm robot designed for flexible handling of complex tasks: the robot, which also has a three-dimensional visual sensor and a six-axis force sensor, can handle cloth and other flexible materials, and a co ordinated dual-arm control algorithm in the robot helps it perform complicated tasks while avoiding obstructions; each of the arms is 3.6 feet long and has seven degrees of freedom – and according to Matsushita, the robot can recognise objects almost instantaneously, and it should make possible automation of production processes that are presently considered too complex to be done by machines.
