That cartridge tape storage subsystem for midrange machines headed a string of new products launched by Memorex Telex UK Ltd at last week’s Mid-Range Systems Today exhibition (CI No 1,162). Memorex claims that the new 5460 3480-compatible storage system provides AS/400 and System/38 users with the kind of tape processing capbility previously confined to mainframe users, and represents a major enhancement in back-up operations. It also says that with a capacity of over 200Mb, the cartridges offer 25% more storage space than open reel tape, but require only 20% of the physical space. Additional features include in-built diagnostics, and an ACL cartridge loader, which loads up to 10 tapes automatically, and improves tape throughput by making some 2Gb of storage accessible, without involving the operator. Displays are also provided at the controller and drive level to show the product’s operating condition, and the need for cartridge cleaning. A basic configuration, comprising a cabinet housing a controller and a tape drive is available at a price of UKP35,155. The configuration can be expanded to four tape drives, by placing a second drive alongside the first, and a further two in a separate cabinet. The company also launched six new display stations for System/3X and the AS/400. The 1197 series 2 family, an extension of the company’s existing 1197 family, comprises the new 1197C2, 1197D2, and 1197E2 models. The C2 is a 14, colour version; the D2 and E2 are green and amber, 15 models. All three models offer support for dual sessions, plus an additional session for host addressable printing. They are described by Memorex as plug-compatible alternatives to IBM 3197-C and 3197-D twinax displays. Memorex also added three new 1196A, 1196B, and 1196C models to its existing 1196 range of 12 displays. The 1196A and 1196B are monochrome displays, and are compatible with the IBM 3196; the 1196C provides support for dual host sessions, seven colours, and is compatible with the IBM 3197-C. Models A and B within the 1196 family are UKP750; the 1196C costs UKP1,100. The 1197C2 and D2 are priced at UKP1,128, while the E2 costs UKP1,250. All six models are available now. Final announcements focussed on new printers, specifically the 1225S shuttle matrix printer for the System/3X and the AS/400, a new line of mainframe and midrange dot matrix printers, and the addition of a nonimpact model to its existing mid-range offerings. Memorex says that the shuttle printer is compatible with an IBM 5225 Model 4, and provides draft quality printing a the rate of 400 lines per minute, a data processing mode at 300 lines per minute, and near letter quality printing at 82 lines per minute. Direct connection to a System/3X or AS/400 is provided through a twinax interface, while remote connection is achieved via either an IBM 5294/5394 remote controller, or the workstation controller. It also provides support for a range of typefaces, character sets, graphics and bar codes. It will be available in four weeks; pricing will be announced in two. The new line of desktop Intelligent Printer Data Stream or IPDS printers is made up of the 1224C matrix printers for the 3270 environment, and a similar 1224T range for the mid-range environment. New matrix offerings for non-IDPS use in 3270 and plug-compatible environments comprise the 1387A and 1387E ranges, and the low-cost 1210-1 and 1210-2 series. Print speeds and memory on the 1224 models range from 250chps and 256Kb on the low-end models, to 400chps and 512Kb on the high-resolution models; prices range form UKP2,300 to UKP3,000. The 1387A is a desktop unit, measuring just 25.5 by 17.5, and priced at UKP2,800. It features All Points Addressable, APA, printing, and a number of 3270 enhancements. Print speeds range from 400chps in draft print, 200chps in high resolution print, and 100chps in near letter quality mode. The 1397E is designed to support a range of office applications in the 3270 environment. Priced at UKP3,075, it offers a choice of 21 national languages, four character spacings, and four line
spacings, and operates at 400chps in draft and 100chps in near letter quality mode. The 1210-1 attaches to the IBM 3270, and offers emulation for the IBM 4241-1 and 3287 data streams. Print speeds are 220chps in draft, and 44chps in near letter quality mode. It is priced at UKP1,450. The 1210-2 attaches to the AS/400 and System/36 and /38, and prints at similar speeds to the 1210-1, and costs UKP1,120. Finally, comes the 4390, a 90 pages-per minute, non-impact printer for System/38s and AS/400s. It has a print resolution of 240 by 240 characters per inch, and uses the IBM 5225-3 interface, thus eliminating the need for system modifications. Additional features include a range of different international character sets, page rotation, and an easy to use operation panel. Prices for the 4390 start at UKP50,660.
