The newly merged personal computer operations of Memorex Telex NV – which is predominantly the old Telex business in Tulsa, Oklahoma – has scored a singular coup in landing a $45m three year contract for as many as 15,000 MS-DOS micros from Phillips Petroleum Co. The machines will be made in Tulsa, so Phillips is clearly supporting local industry, the US oil business being concentrated in Oklahoma and Texas. Phillips wants the machines for resale to its petrol station operators for use to track sales, inventories and accounts. The contract, with the Memorex Telex Corp US subsidiary of the Netherlands-registered, London headquartered firm will also install and support the machines under the agreement.
