US workstation and personal computer builders are not the only ones to be hurting from the desperate shortage of memory chips. According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, things are just as bad in Japan. The paper reports that NEC Corp is having to make its PC 9800 series of personal computers on two production lines – one using 256K memory chips, the other 1Ms, because it can’t get enough 256Ks to use only those. And the shortage has spread to read-only memories, with Nintendo Co, maker of the Famicon games machine, unable to launch a new game for two months, and abandoning work on some new products.
