Analysts who were looking for those triple density 3380 disk drives to give IBM’s fourth quarter figures a fillip will have to find something else: according to Electronic News, the drives and their new controllers have hit problems in beta test, and launch has had to be put back to early 1988. There are reportedly two areas that have been giving trouble – the microcode in the new versions of the 3880 controllers, and the fibre optic connections that will be used to link the storage subsystems to the channels on the 3090s.
